S.S. Coachella Cruise Festival

A cruise ship will be the next venue for Coachella, the annual festival that has become one of the west coast’s most popular, music events.  Fans will get an entirely different experience listening to their favorite artists while sailing through the Caribbean, versus camping in Indio, CA, the desert-venue where the event has taken place since 1999.

The S.S. Coachella will offer two sailings on December 16th and 19th and will leave from Fort Lauderdale on the Celebrity Silhouette.   Featured artists include Pulp, Hot Chip, Girl Talk, Yeasayer, Sleigh Bells, James Murphy, and roughly 15 other acts.  Ticket prices range from $500 to $9,000 and accommodations likely vary from a four-person cabin next to the anchor, to hopefully sitting shotgun next to the captain for that price.  Not included in the ticket price are transportation to Miami, Florida or the cruiser’s bar tab… which could rival the ticket price given the level of partying that takes place at this event.

The last Coachella event was two consecutive weekends long and accommodated  a total of 158,000 music fans – tickets were offered well in advance and sold out within three hours.  According to the Ship Mate mobile app for cruisers, the Celebrity Silhouette holds 2,800 cruise passengers.  If sales take place at the same rate as the spring event, the S.S. Coachella will be sold out in 6 minutes and 22 seconds.  I predict a scalping rate averaging a million dollars per ticket come winter time.
